Every year, Belgian beer is nominated for awards so here’s a selection of those that have won or which have been highly recommended.

– Blanche de Bruxelles
Strength: 4.5% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: Made from the very best crops, this cloudy beer is due to it being brewed from 40% wheat. Has an aroma of coriander and bitter orange peel. The beer’s logo is the Manneken Pis (little boy having a wee!) that can be seen in Brussels. In 2016, it was awarded a medal at the World Beer Awards for the category of “Belgium’s Best Belgian Style Witbier”.

– Chouffe Houblon
Strength: 9% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: An unfiltered “Indian Pale Ale” type of beer that was first brewed in 2006. Three types of hops are used to make this and it has a pleasant fruitiness. In 2015, it was awarded a Bronze Medal at the World Beer Awards for the category of “Imperial IPA”.

– Gouden Carolus Classic
Strength: 8.5% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: Ruby red in colour, this beer is known as the “Emperor’s Beer”. It combines a warmness found in wine with the freshness of beer. – Petrus Aged Red
Strength: 8.5% ABV

Beer Description: 8.5% ABV is pretty strong for a fruit flavoured beer. Petrus has expanded their variation on the Oud Bruin theme by adding a dark ale with real cherries. In 2016, it was awarded a gold medal at the World Beer Awards for the category of “Fruit Lambic”.

– Rodenbach Grand Cru

The Rodenbach Brewery was founded in 1836 where they now store nearly 300 oak casks that the beer is kept in to mature. Flemish red ales are renowned for their sourness and as everyone’s taste buds differ, you either love this style of beer or hate it.
