In Belgium, most beers have their own branded beer glass that come in various shapes and sizes. The beer glass is important as not only does it look nice, but it also enhances the drinking experience.
Different beer glasses are designed to accentuate the beer aroma. Wider bowls allow more swirling of the beer, which in effect releases more of the aroma. The shape of the beer glass can also influence how the beer hits your palate and can therefore improve flavour perception. The design of a beer glass can also control the temperature of the beer, for example if the glass has a stem or handle, the beer is kept cooler as your hand is kept away from the liquid.
Here are some of the common beer glass styles:
Pint Glass – typically found in UK pubs, they are a standard, versatile shaped glass suitable for most types of beers, such as lagers, ales, and stouts.
Pilsner Glass – these tend to be tall and slender and common in Germany. These showcase the colour and clearness of the beer.
Stemmed Pilsner Glass – used for serving premium pilsners. The stem gives the glass an elegant appearance.
Weizen Glass – again, Weizen glasses are common in Germany where wheat beers are popular. The slight taper helps to maintain a foamy head.
Stein – ideal to serve beers in that are meant to be enjoyed in bigger quantities. They are sturdy and heavy with a big handle.
Tulip Glass – the flared lip and bulbous body enhance the aroma and are used in Belgium for IPAs and sour beers.
Chalice – great for serving strong, flavourful beers, such as Belgian dubbels and triples. The wide mouth allows for easy sipping.
