Every year, Belgian beer is nominated for awards so here's a selection of those that have won or which have been highly recommended.
- Affligem Tripel
Strength: 8.5% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: This Abbey golden beer, with over 900 years of brewing experience, achieved gold place at the 2008 Brewers Association World Beer Cup for the Belgian Style Tripel category as well as in 2004 and came silver in 2006 for the same award.
- Delirium Tremens
Strength: 9% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: A Flemish golden beer that uses three different yeasts and has a pink elephant as the logo. Delirium Tremens is the Latin word for “trembling madness”. This beer was named “the best beer in the world” in 1998 at the World Beer Championships in the USA, as well as winning a prize in the Belgian Style Strong Ale category at the Hong Kong International Beer Award 2009 and winning the World's Best Special Pale Ale award at the World Beer Awards 2009.
- Gouden Carolus Classic
Strength: 8.5% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: This Flemish dark beer has won the World's Best Standard Dark Strong Ale Award twice both at the World Beer Awards 2009 in London and at the World Beer Awards 2007. It also came first in the World Beer Awards 2010 for Europe's Best Abbey / Trappist Dark Ale.
- Liefmans Cuvee-Brut
Strength: 6% ABV
Size of Bottle: 37.5cl
Beer Description: A Belgian cherry fruit beer that has been renamed Liefmans Cuvee Brut and is made by mixing young beer with old beer. It was the first brewery to wrap their beers by hand in tissue-paper. This beer received gold for the Speciality Fruit Beer at the Brewing Industry International Awards 2000 as well as winning the World's Best Kriek Beer at the World Beer Awards 2009.
- St Feuillien Blonde
Strength: 7.5% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: This blonde, Abbey ale has a smooth, frothy head and smells of aromatic hops and citrus. It won the World Beer Awards 2010 for the World's Best Pale Ale - Abbey / Trappist.
- Triple Karmeliet
Strength: 8% ABV
Size of Bottle: 33cl
Beer Description: Made with three grains – wheat, oat and barley, Tripel Karmeliet has won numerous awards. In 1998, this beer achieved gold for the Belgian Style Tripel Award and silver in 2002. The 2008 World Beer Awards also gave this beer three awards - World's Best Ale, World's Best Pale Ale and World's Best Strong Pale Ale.
